CHAPTER

THIRTY

It had been a while since Kylie visited Los Angeles.

And her homecoming was far from welcoming.

Draker’s phone said, In one hundred feet, your destination will be on the left, 3294 Concordia Street.

As Draker pulled the BMW to a stop, Kylie glanced around, taking in the run-down neighborhood. Once-charming two- and three-story buildings were abandoned. Faded walls. Boarded-up windows. Overgrown yards littered with trash and rusted shopping carts. Figures hunched over, peering at the car.

In the shadows of the nearest alley, the flicker of a lighter cast a brief glint of a shirtless man in sagging pants staring hard in Kylie’s direction. She looked away.

Draker retrieved a folded paper from his pocket, frowned at it, then looked through the windshield.

“That must be it up there,” he said, pointing toward a boarded-up door. “Suite B.”

Kylie followed his gaze, finding the building. It was just as run-down as everything surrounding it—in fact, more so. This building was entirely deserted, its entrance boarded over and padlocked. As Kylie stared at it, a wave of frustration washed over her.

She’d barely spoken since they left Ventura, but her thoughts had been racing. Again, she remembered what she said to Draker as they rushed out of her house.

“I would have been better off if Beau had never called me, if you’d never come into my life.”

She’d meant it. Even now, after an hour and a half ride in the car, she felt another pang of resentment toward Beau for dragging her into this mess.

She’d been alone.

In her house.

Laptop open on her dining room table, searching, tumbling down pointless rabbit holes, trying to find anything to help her find Elise.

Then the phone had rung.

And changed everything.

“Howdy. Kylie Payton?” the man had said in a molasses-thick Texas accent.

“Speaking.”

“You’re looking for your missing cousin Elise, aren’t you? My name’s Beau. I think I can help.”

Two days later, yesterday, Ty Draker strode into Kylie’s life at the Green Feather Cafe. Since then, her world had been a whirlwind of chaos and danger. Three times since Draker’s arrival, she’d thought she might die.

But as she turned and looked at Draker now, thoughtfully studying the building before them—perhaps scanning for exits or enemies—some of her anger began to melt away.

The night before. Their moment together.

Draker had been powerful—all those muscles of his… shit!—but he’d held her with a surprisingly gentle strength. There was a moment, a several-minute stretch, when things had heated up, becoming intense and almost primal. But then, as their rhythm slowed, that quiet strength returned and she felt his careful, firm grip once again.

That was Draker.

A quiet strength.

Even if the guy could be an aloof ass, there was something undeniably good about him.

She turned to him.

“Okay, so this is a dead end,” she said, being much gentler in tone than she had the last time she spoke. “What are we going to do now?”

Draker shrugged. “Who said it’s a dead end?”

Huh?

It looked like he was about to step out of the car. Kylie sat for a moment, uncertain whether she was supposed to follow.
